Starting out with surfing is exciting! Your first surf equipment should include:
Surfboard: For beginners, a soft-top or foam board is recommended as they offer more stability and forgiveness while learning. They're usually larger and provide better buoyancy.
Leash: This is crucial for safety; it keeps your board attached to your ankle, preventing it from getting away from you in the waves. FCS surfboard leashes are of great quality. Make sure to get a leash in the same length as your surfboard.
Wetsuit: The thickness will depend on the water temperature where you're surfing. A wetsuit keeps you warm and protected from the elements. To find the perfect wetsuit will probably take a couple of tries. There are multiple fantastic companies which offer great wetsuits like Billabong, Roxy or Oneill to just name a few. But they do come in slightly different sizes and widen in the water. Definitely try the wetsuit on before purchasing and it should feel like a "second skin" on land and yet be comfortable. There should not be any areas with air between you and the wetsuit or a lot of folds.
Wax: Applying wax to your board gives you better grip and traction while surfing. It will prevent from slipping but won't be needed until you surf a hard top surfboard - so nothing to worry about yet.
Fins: Most boards come with fins, but double-check if yours need to be purchased separately & make sure your fins are plastic fins in the beginning. Plastic fins are safer and you won't feel a difference. Click here to see an example of fins we like.
Surf Bag or Cover: To protect your board when transporting it or your car seats if you have a board with wax on it. Once you have a hard top this will definitely be crucial to protect it from heat & sun in the car. We love this one because it is thick enough to protect our surfboards, light enough to not be taking too much space and bright enough to prevent the boards from overheating even when the sun is shining directly into the car.
Sunprotection - Sunscreen: The right sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin when surfing: Forget about regular sunscreen, what you need is zinc and surf specific face protection. Our current favorite is the Vertra Mick Fanning Face Stick , looks & feels like make up and doesn't irritate the eyes.
Remember, starting out with the right gear can make learning to surf more enjoyable and safer. As you progress and become more comfortable, you might explore different board shapes, sizes, and additional accessories to suit your surfing style and preferences.
