Surfing New York City

Updated: Jan 8

After staying 7 days in New York City my heart was aching for nature. So when I realized that it is possible to surf in New York, I gave it a try - and even though it was in the middle of summer with usually no waves or only small waves present - I got lucky and ended up surfing one of my most memorable waves. It was a small left but long and I managed to remember crouching down and touching the wave's face with my left hand. It was just one of the kind of waves you'll never forget. I remember calling my husband and being so excited to tell him about it.

In case you're ever in New York City, I wanted to share this wonderful little day-trip advice with you. This day really made me fall in love with the city so deeply. Suddenly New York seemed to be able to offer literally everything.

New York City being New York City everything is expensive - but me not being Anna Delvey, I found the cheapest possible option to get to Rockaway Beach: From Manhattan for only 3$ by subway (It does take one hour one way but it is a nice ride)! As always I traveled low budget so this made me very happy. Just take the purple line all the way down to Beach 90 St.

I think there are multiple surf shops in the area and I went to the one closest to the train station (Breakwater Surf Co. at 67-20 Rockaway Beach Bvld). After checking the waves (1-2 feet) I rented a big soft top. I specifically mention this surfshop because I remember the great customer service and advice I got there. I could leave my valuables and picked them up later. I didn't have a wetsuit and was lucky to make a great deal on a 2mm onsie.

Such a nice memory! Have you surfed in this area? Tell me about your experience. I love the East Coast and will go back for sure.
